A Simple E-Commerce Explanation
Generally, e-commerce sites allow customers the ability to browse through an online catalog, view products and product details, then add items to a shopping cart, which stays with them as they travel through the site. Then, when they are finished, they can check out the items in their cart using a credit card. The order is secured using encryption, and they get a confirmation email. The administrator of the site can then retreive the order using a special web-based interface. Some sites can be customized to recognize a shopper when they come back, and offer them special discounts, or even suggest items.
